BIRMINGHAM, AL (June 27, 2024) – Marshall County, Tennessee, participated in Retail Academy, a program with a focus on retail economic development developed by Retail Strategies. The county previously participated in the program in 2019 through a partnership with Tennessee Economic and Community Development (TNECD). Since then, the county has seen tremendous growth and with new staff wanted a refresher course and updated demographics and strategy for retail growth. The two-day educational course equipped county leaders with essential skills and knowledge for their retail recruitment efforts.
Hosted on June 18 and 19, participants learned tactics for developing and expanding retail in Marshall County. Under the guidance of retail real estate industry experts, the program provided valuable education to the local leaders.
Emily Darnell, Marshall County JECDB Director, stated, “We were excited to participate in the Retail Academy event. Becoming more educated in retail recruitment is a significant step forward for our community, and we anticipate its positive impact on Marshall County. We’ve seen what Retail Strategies has been able to do for other communities in Tennessee, so implementing a similar strategy for Marshall County is a great way to advance our efforts.”
The program’s curriculum will include three major areas:
Market Analysis: Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of their local market through customer and trade area data, enabling them to make informed decisions about retail recruitment.
Real Estate Focus: The program will highlight strategic real estate opportunities that can attract retail businesses to Marshall County, fostering economic growth.
Retail Recruitment Strategies: Participants will be trained in effective outreach methods to engage with brokers, developers, and expanding retailers, paving the way for successful retail recruitment.
Madeline Farr, director of Retail Academy, stated, “Education is the foundation of effective retail recruitment. Through Retail Academy the county received a new market analysis, real estate training, and a list of retail and restaurant brands that fit the market.”
