What Cleveland County wants

The Star recently asked its readers what they would like to see come to Cleveland County.
We received more than 500 responses. Answers varied from vague requests for more children’s activities to a resounding desire for a Target.
Shelby City Manager Rick Howell said he works with a company called Retail Strategies to identify businesses that may want to call the area home.
Retail Strategies communicates with franchises to find what they are looking for – often placing importance on population, median income and traffic patterns.
“We have to recognize who we are and temper our wants and desires with reasonable expectations of what retailers really want to be here now,” Howell said. “A lot of things have to happen to attract larger retailers like Target.”
