BIRMINGHAM, AL (April 27, 2023) – Crockett, Texas has announced plans to use funding from the American Rescue Plan to develop a new strategic plan for the revitalization of the city’s downtown square. Downtown Strategies, a division of Retail Strategies, will develop a comprehensive five-year strategic plan for the revitalization of the city’s downtown area.
“Crockett is one of the oldest communities in Texas, so it’s full of historic charm,” said John Angerstein, Crockett’s City Administrator. “We believe investing our American Rescue Plan funds in a downtown plan will pay dividends for many years to come. I met with the Retail Strategies team at the Texas Municipal Conference last fall where I learned about their community development services for downtown. Their proven track record of successful downtown revitalization projects across the United States impressed us and gives us confidence in their ability to provide the expertise and guidance necessary to help us take our downtown to the next level.”

The partnership comes at a time when Crockett is experiencing a surge of interest from investors and developers looking to capitalize on the city’s unique history and character. The city boasts a rich cultural heritage and is home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Houston County Courthouse, the Methodist Church, the Downes-Aldrich House and the Monroe-Crook House.
“We are excited to work closely with city officials, business owners, and community stakeholders in Crockett to identify opportunities for growth and development in the downtown area,” said Christopher Bontrager, vice president of Retail Strategies. “The strategic plan will include recommendations for improvements to the physical infrastructure of the downtown, as well as strategies for attracting new businesses, increasing foot traffic, and enhancing the overall vibrancy and vitality of the area.”
