BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 18, 2022) – The city of South Milwaukee has formed a partnership with Downtown Strategies, to create a five-year strategic plan for Downtown South Milwaukee. Downtown Strategies, a division of Retail Strategies, will host a Strategic Visioning Workshop to gather stakeholder feedback to assist in the development of the strategic plan.

“Over the past few years, the city of South Milwaukee has worked hard to make improvements throughout our downtown, including the Bucyrus Club & Event Center renovation, our streetscaping project, and the creation of a Tax Incremental District. We are currently engaged in the construction of a park and community event space to be named Bucyrus Commons and we have received proposals for up to almost 200 new apartments downtown,” said Mayor Jim Shelenske.

“The Bucyrus Foundation will be completely funding the strategic planning effort and we are fortunate to have their support as we plan for next steps. With the participation of residents and downtown business and property owners, we are excited to partner with Downtown Strategies to create a plan that, among other things, welcomes new businesses, addresses commercial vacancies downtown, and assists in the development of business and civic grant programs to be funded by the Bucyrus Foundation,” finished the Mayor.

“Bucyrus International, Inc. called Downtown South Milwaukee home for nearly 120 years. Now, we are pleased to contribute to the area’s revitalization as new projects are executed and the future of the former Bucyrus campus is determined,” said Tim Sullivan, Bucyrus Foundation Chairman and former CEO of Bucyrus International, Inc. “We are confident that the planning effort with Downtown Strategies will build on the recent progress made and further assist in the downtown’s transformation.”

Downtown Strategies will host an in-market workshop on July 20 with business owners, downtown property owners, and community leaders to gain feedback and stimulate dialogue on the stakeholders’ vision for downtown. The team will execute an in-depth market and real estate analysis to create specific strategies focused on design, walkability, policy, tourism, and economic catalyst opportunities for the downtown area.

“Downtown Strategies will assist with downtown resurgence through research and stakeholder feedback,” said Beth Miller, portfolio director for Retail Strategies. “Downtown South Milwaukee offers many great features, and our team looks forward to spending time in the area this summer as we partner with the city.”

My relationship with the Retail Strategies team has been extremely valuable over the last couple of years as I’ve searched for sites in the Southeast. They have been persistent and provided any information they could gather for available properties that fit my criteria. If they received news that a space was coming available they made sure to immediately give me a call and connect with the owners. I would recommend using this service to any of my colleagues looking in their client cities.
